Getting Started Documentation – R4+ EZPi Kits

EZPi R4+ Video Guide #

Getting Started with the EZPi #

NOTE: On the new R4+ kits there is no reason to remove the card as wifi setup is done over SSH now. DO NOT REMOVE THE SD CARD FROM R4+ KITS.

Bootup time: The EZPi will take about 1 minute to fully boot up and show up on your network. If you are using wifi and after 5 minutes it is not on your network, connect it to a hardwired connection and verify your wifi settings.

When you connect the EZPi to your machine it should automatically connect and display the IP address of your Pi on the printer LCD. If it does not you can try typing http://octoprint in your browser to access it. If that fails check your router to see what DHCP address the EZPi grabbed from the router then access it through your web browser (example: http://172.16.21.122).

Please note use a modern browser like Chrome, Brave, FireFox, Safari, or Edge to access the EZPi. Internet Explorer 11 and lower all have issues with the UI working correctly.

If the EZPi auto connects to your printer you will see the IP on your printer LCD. If not see below on connecting to the printer.

Please make sure to keep the EZPi kit out of printer enclosures, direct sunlight, or spaces that have high ambient temps (35C+). Overheating will cause issues and shorten the lifespan of the EZPi kit.

Shutting down the EZPi #

The EZPi is a full Linux based computer. This means that you must shut it down safely. You can shut down the EZPi from the menu at the top of the page or by pressing the power button on the rear of the case. Shutdown takes about 30 seconds. Once it is fully shutdown, the Green power led will turn off.

If you do not shut the EZPi down properly, you can corrupt the SD card and this will require it to be re-imaged. Corruption due to improper shutdown is not covered under warranty.

R4+ Models – If you have the new R4+ model and need the image you can obtain that from our support team by Contacting Us with your order number for your kit and the reason for needing a re-flash.

Connecting the EZPI #

Power – Use the included AC power adapter to connect to the EZPi PWR Port.

Printer (USB) – Use the USB cable for your printer (not supplied with kit) to connect to any of the USB ports on the EZPi kit.

Webcam (USB, optional) – Connect the USB webcam to the BLUE ports on the USB ports on the EZPi kit.

Network (wired) – If you are using a wired network connection (recommended) connect the network cable to the Wired Network Port on the EZPi Kit.

Network (wireless) – To set up the wifi follow our guide here: Changing/Setting Wifi Network

Finding your EZPi IP address Manually #

In the event that your printer does not auto connect you will not get a connection with the IP address on your printer LCD screen.

With your EZPi powered up, connected to your printer, and network you can run this tool to scan your network: Advanced IP Scanner

Once the scan finishes you will see all the devices on your network. Look for one that has “octopi” listed anywhere in the “Name” column. That will be your EZPi device.

That IP address will need to be entered into your web browser.

For example if the IP address is 172.16.21.22 then you will enter http://172.16.21.22 into your web browser. Your IP address will be different than the one shown above as this is scanned on our network here.

Default Logins #

  • Default Username: ezpi
    • Default Password: EzP1.Th3D
  • Default SSH Username: pi
    • Default Password: EzP1.ssh

Change Default Passwords – You should change your EZPi default login password (and ssh password) if you want to prevent unauthorized access through the default credentials. You can see how to do that here: EZPi – Hardening the EZPi Security – TH3D Studio LLC

Per user request, the latest EZPi Pro image does NOT contain a secondary login for recovery purposes. If you lose your password you will need to re-image the SD card and lost passwords are not something we can recover.

Connecting a USB Camera #

If you have purchased a USB camera to connect to the EZPi you need to connect it before powering up the EZPi kit for it to be recognized by Octoprint. We recommend the EZCAM HD Cameras that we carry and the EZPi works with *most* Logitech cameras on the market. We only guarantee compatibility with the EZCAM HD Cameras and Select Logitech Models – C270/C310.

Powering the EZPi #

Included with every kit is a wall AC adapter that supplies 5V 3A to the Pi itself, this is the recommended way to power our kits. You can also use our PoE USB C Splitter if you have a PoE Switch on your network that the EZPi is plugged into.

EZPi Web Interface #

The EZPi is ONLY meant to be used through your web browser. There is no frontend installed for use over a monitor with HDMI or the AV port. If you have a webcam connected it is displayed under the “Printer Control” tab that has the gamepad controller icon. See below for a UI legend.

Port Forward Security Warning #

Do NOT ever port forward to your EZPi. Port forwarding will allow direct access to the EZPi web UI and a malicious person could use it as a point of entry to your private, local network. If you want remote access you should use something like Obico to securely tunnel to your EZPi and this does NOT require any port forwarding. TH3D Studio LLC is not responsible for any network intrusion should you choose to not heed our warnings about port forwarding.

USB Connection Setup #

Please follow the step below to set your printer baud rate if the EZPi cannot auto-detect the printer connection.

Most printers use 115200 or 250000 for their baud rate. Try 115200 first as most machines use this.

Hardening the EZPi Security #

If you are using your EZPi on a network that could have other people that would mess with your installation we have a guide here on what to do to increase the security of your EZPi device: EZPi – Hardening the EZPi Security – TH3D Studio LLC

Again, it is NEVER recommended to port forward to your EZPi installation ever.
